The Sacramento Kings and NBA announced Thursday that they have begun a joint investigation into the allegations made in a civil case against trainer Luke Walton that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2014.

“The Kings and NBA take these claims very seriously and will cooperate to conduct a full and thorough investigation, the team and the league said in a statement.

The Kings’ investigation will be led by Sue Ann Van Dermyden, founder of Sacramento law firm Van Dermyden Maddux, and Jennifer Doughty, a senior associate lawyer

The NBA’s survey will be led by Elizabeth Maringer, the vice-vice president and assistant general counsel, integrity and investigations of the league.

Kelli Tennant – a former host at Spectrum SportsNet LA, the Lakers Regional Sports Network – claims that Walton, then an assistant with the Golden State Warriors who was in Los Angeles on a road trip, attacked sexually t her in a hotel in Santa Monica, California. Tennant’s lawyer says it happened in 2014.

Tennant said on Tuesday that she was afraid that Walton would rape her and that she had not made public statements earlier, because she was scared.

Tennant had a working relationship with Walton from his time as guest analyst at Spectrum. In the trial, she claims that she met him at Casa Del Mar Hotel to release a copy of her book, “A Student Enthusiast Guide That Transitions to a World After Sport”, which he wrote.

Tennant claims that Walton invited her up to her room, where he pointed her in bed and forced her to force her into the pit.

Tennant said she did not go to the police or talked to officials at Spectrum when she was only 25 and was scared.

Walton’s lawyer Mark Baute called “baseless” claims and said that Tennant was “an opportunist”.

“These statements are false and Luke’s innocence is proved in court” Baute said in a statement Wednesday. “[Tuesday’s] press conference was a poorly staged attempt to portray the prosecutor as a viable spokesman for an important movement. Her lawyers want to create a public circus to distract from their complete lack of evidence to support their outrageous claims. We will not try this case in the media or pay them a penny. “

The King employed Walton earlier this month, shortly after he and the Lakers mutually separated.
