9659007] In a resignation letter received by NBC News to Leavenworth County Clerk Janet Klasinski, the current county commissioner Louis Klemp said he would go down from his post at 9 o’clock on Tuesday.
“In order to maintain focus and prioritize county needs I have made a decision to resign,” Klemp wrote. “I regret my last comment made during a Leavenworth County Commission meeting and for the negative backlash to society.”
Klemp’s decision follows various conversations from members of society after a conversation he had on November 13th with Triveece Penelton, a black city planner, at a board meeting. According to the video, the Commissioner did not agree with Penelton’s proposed development plan, claiming that she would not believe he picked her because they were “part of the championship”.
Leavenworth County Administrator addressed Klemp’s comment Friday says that the comments were “not a reference to Nazis” and that the Commissioner had referred to the divorced divide he and the woman had shared.
“On several occasions over the past year, Klemp has said that those with a gap in their front teeth are members of the championship,” said Mark Loughry, managing director.
But the statement still caused anxiety, including Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer who had demanded Klemp’s departure on Saturday.
While Klemp had told the NBC Kansas City affiliate KSHB TV that his comment was a joke, the commissioner eventually accepted calls for his ousting.
“My Attempts to Identify an Equality h a presenter was meaningful but misunderstood by some and definitely not racially motivated, “Klemp wrote in his letter.” I have reached the presenter and extended my regret and support. “
