Former Cowboys defensive ruler David Irving, who was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for repeated failed drug tests and says he won’t play again unless the league allows players to use marijuana, believes he is colliding with coach Jason Garrett partly because of the color of his skin.

Irving said at CBS Sports Radio that he thinks Garrett is awkward and uncomfortable about black players.

“Jason Garrett and I have never really come forward,” says Irving via Clarence Hill of Star-Telegram . “To be honest with you, not many people will agree with this man. I wish I could put a finger on [why]. I really do. I don’t think that’s just a reason. It’s not just a person who can’t get along with him. There are a lot of people. If I can say anything, I feel like he needs to be more comfortable with people in color, to be honest with you. There are many people in color around, and you will have to deal with us. If you do not know how to talk to us or relate to us, I do not know. It is a tough position … I think that It’s a little uncomfortable for him. Not to say the human racist. He’s definitely not racist. Don’t misunderstand me. It’s just maybe he’s socially troublesome. “

This is the first time we’ve heard such an accusation of Garrett, who has been cowboy’s head coach since 201 0, was an NFL assistant for six years before and was an NFL player for more than a decade. If Garrett really had trouble getting along with black players, it seems unlikely that the problem would first come up three decades after he first entered the NFL.

Irving and Garrett have collapsed, but there is little reason to believe the problems between them are race.
