The official OTA of iOS 11.4 will arrive in the next few hours (or minutes) and brings with it some new very interesting features that we will try to summarize in the best possible way. By way of summary, we tell you that the main novelties are the messages in iCloud , the new AirPlay 2 and the new stereo function for the HomePod.
IOS users had been waiting for time officially all the functions that could be seen in the iOS 11.4 beta , and finally have them available; Let’s talk a little about each of them.
This functionality was announced in the WDDC 2017, so we had to wait a year to have it between us. With messages in iCloud, you can synchronize all messages between devices iOS of the same user, whether iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac, so it opens the possibility of recovering these messages every time you configure a new device without having to lose anything.
But the advantage of the messages in iCLoud does not remain in the recovery and synchronization of contents, but that the deleted is also synchronized and the iMessage multimedia elements they are saved in the cloud while they stop occupying space in the physical storage of our smartphone, something that can be very useful for people with a low capacity device.
To make matters worse, all messages stored in iCloud will go end-to-end encryption and the key is a derivative of unique information of each device combined with the PIN code of the same, so it seems that the security of this new function will be very high (unless some hacker makes his own).
Apple has not focused only on messaging, but also tries to position itself more strongly in the segment of smart devices that are so fashionable lately.
His trick for this is AirPlay 2 , an improvement to your wireless audio system that now allows you to send differentiated sound to different devices. With this new feature, we can send music, podcast or any other content to different rooms of our home, but we also have the possibility to synchronize all those devices so that they reproduce the same thing.
AirPlay 2 is compatible with iOS devices, but it is also compatible with HomePod speakers Apple TV and Siri personal assistant, who will now be able to understand new commands that make this function a reality.
As an example, we can tell Siri to play rock in our room and classical music in the living room, or send our latest model to all the rooms simultaneously, to give some examples. As is logical, synchronized playback and volume between devices will also be possible.
HomePod is the intelligent speaker of Apple, a device that has to compete with Alexa and that until now had only been presented in the US, Britain and Australia. With the iOS 11.4 update, this speaker will also start commercializing in Canada, France and Germany from June 18 , although nothing is yet known about Spain.
iOS 11.4 aims to make HomePods more versatile and that is why, coinciding with the simultaneous synchronization, Apple has added the stereo functionality to the device, so you can listen to two separate channels in the same room, improving our musical experience.
To make this new feature more effective, HomePods include a self-detection function that will analyze your position in the room to balance with your partner and offer a better sound.
These are in summary the news of iOS 11.4, together with performance improvements and bug fixes. If you want to be among the first to enjoy them, you just have to go to Settings / General -> Software update. With a little luck, you will have it available.
