It seems that at the time of Netflix, HBO, Spotify and other online content platforms on demand, talk about buying DVDs seems as old as recording movies on VHS tapes , true? Well, no! There are many people who refuse to switch to digital format and who they still prefer to have the physical asset in their possession (it’s my case with books, for example). If you are one of those people who prefer the physical disk to the digital format, I am more than sure that Amazon will be one of your suppliers par excellence and, as such, there is one important thing that you must take into account first of all: the regions.
Each DVD has a regional code which varies depending on the area in which it is going to be distributed. These codes are intended to allow companies the maximum control of a work, such as the price, the content to show , etc. How is it achieved? Blocking DVD or Blu-Ray players so they can only play those discs encoded for their region. It is similar – and in fact goes hand in hand – to what happens with analog TV signal coding systems NTCS, PAL and SECAM.
In total there are 7 + 3 regions for DVDs , Y three regions for the Blu-Rays . Choosing badly the product that you are going to buy can lead to you not being able to reproduce it in your house. But, let us start at the beginning. To which places does each region correspond? Here below you have them listed:
To these seven regions should be added the following three:
On the other hand, Blu-Ray discs have 3 + 1 regions :
In theory you should not worry too much because Amazon knows from where the visits. That way you can show you products that 1) are sent to your region and 2) are compatible with the players that are sold in your area . However, as a forewarned man is worth two, it never hurts to make sure that the region of the DVD you are about to pay for is the correct one.
For this, you only have to scroll to the product description and look for the code of the region, as it is marked in the image below. If the one in your country appears, buy it quiet, because you can play it without any problem .
If you are curious, all DVDs -come from Amazon or not- that you have by house come marked with the region in which they are compatible. You can find the code on the back cover of the cover. Here below are some examples.
