If getting active and staying healthy was easy, then we’d all have a good physique. A high level of motivation is necessary to feel healthy all year long. Here are some tips to motivate yourself to get up and move more every single day:

Set a Realistic Goal

Start with simple goals and then progress to longer range goals. Remember to make your goals realistic and achievable. Setting an unrealistic or unhealthy goal is just setting yourself up for failure or exhaustion.

Fitness goals can be anything, small or big—you might have a goal to be able to do 10 burpees in a row without stopping or a goal of doing a handstand push up without a wall. The goal doesn’t even have to be an organized race. It could be a mission to fit into that bikini by the annual beach vacation or that old pair of jeans buried in your closet.

Whatever it is, define it, write it down and revisit it daily.

Schedule a Regular Workout Time

Sit down with your weekly schedule and try to build in an hour each day to be good to your body.
Write your workout on your calendar and rearrange things around this one hour as if it were any other important appointment you have to keep. You can also use technology like daily e-mail reminders, workout journaling websites, or apps to keep you on task.

Some of the most committed exercisers do it every day before the sun comes up or late at night when the kids are in bed.

By nature, humans need change and variety to stay motivated. Change your workout routine on a regular basis to keep things fresh and new. Your mind and body will become bored with the same old workout routine day in and day out.

Try new things, go to new classes and be open to different methods of working out. Workout variety challenges your body in unique ways. Whether it’s a toning and sculpting class that changes choreography every week or a trail run that changes scenery every season, get creative and mix it up so that you can continue to be challenged, which will keep your motivation high.

Include activities you truly enjoy and look forward to doing, and can even make you forget you’re working out — like dancing, hula hooping, or playing sports with family and friends.

Bribe Yourself

You’ve got to reward yourself. Think of something enticing that will push you to go to the gym.

It could be a new piece of clothing that shows off a muscle group you’ve been working on or as simple as long and indulgent salt bath. It’s always easier to get through something you don’t want to do when you have something to look forward to after.

Make a reward for every session, every week, every pound, or every task you do. This is all about training your brain. When you see the good stuff behind all the work, it’ll give you the strength to keep going and to stick with it.

For those that need a little push in the motivation department, scheduling regular workouts with a buddy or group can make all the difference.

You’re less likely to hit snooze or head home for the night if you know you’re leaving your workout partner in the lurch. The laughs, high fives and words of encouragement from your peers are the things that will ultimately inspire you to get up and start moving.

Surround yourself with people that help build your confidence as much as your strength.

You never want to be the person who quits and leaves early. Each day, motivate yourself to blast past your limits. Surround yourself with people that will encourage you to be better every day.

Remember, the people you work out with can have a huge influence on you, make sure that they are encouraging, motivating and fun to be around.
