Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade has been a tradition in Manhattan for decades. In addition to watching the festivities at home, people have gone to the event with their friends and family from all over the country to see the fleets. Even though millions see parade, few actually know the origin of the iconic event.

History.com explained that the Thanksgiving parade derives from other cities, including Philadelphia and Chicago. New York had a smaller tradition involving less of the actual floaters and more of a Halloween party where children would venture out and hit the doors and ask for little goodies from their neighbors and friends.

The first official Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held November 27, 1924. The parade included various fleets, bands and animals from Central Park Zoo, like elephants, bears and monkeys.

It’s the 92nd Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and this might be the coldest Thanksgiving in a hundred years, with temperatures in NYC in the 20’s for the day. So, for those who dare to watch the parade in person, be sure to bump up with many layers. With the weather and winds being so cold and difficult, there is always the chance that the fleets can end up in land. CBS reported that the Thanksgiving Day’s paradeballons were last founded in 1971.

For those who hope to follow the parade, CBS News has reported: “The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade through Midtown Manhattan begins on the west side of the central park near the American Museum of Natural History and progresses down Central Park West and 6th Avenues against Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square. “

The Performers for the parade are filled with march bands and A-list artists. Some of these artists include Ashley Tisdale, Bad Bunny, Barenaked Ladies, Rita Ora, Diana Ross, John Legend, Kane Brown and Leona Lewis.
