At a time when car manufacturers like General Motors and Ford carry out small cars and replace them with crossovers, Mazda strongly suggests that a technologically advanced exclusive version of the compact Mazda3 can defy the odds.
U.S. Mazda3 and all compact cars are off 14 percent this year
2019 Mazda3, built from the wheels and introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Tuesday, offers a wide range of engines – perhaps the most in its class of five – A new tag on the company’s Kodo design language that has more fluid curves and fewer sharp pleats and angles, as well as a new interior that facilitates refinement and simplicity.
First, the technical. The Mazda3 shoots into the premium area with an extra 1
.8-liter diesel engine and a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-X engine. This is the first manufacturing engine for the North American market to use spark-proof compression ignition, which means it combines gasoline and diesel combustion properties.
Diesel is Mazda’s first and it becomes a compact car segment exclusively once the Chevrolet phase out Cruze diesel in March. The three other engines are a 1.5 liter, a 2.0-liter and a 2.5-liter, all marketed under the Skyactiv-G name. Mazda plans to offer the car with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Mazda3’s base contains a new designed chassis containing more high strength steel with frame rails that absorb crash energy. The car comes with four-wheel drive brakes and front McPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension.
The safety of both passengers and pedestrians has been prioritized by Mazda engineers. The hood has an energy absorbing inner structure designed to reduce foot injury on the head. On the option list is a new driver monitoring system called i-Activesense containing an infrared camera and an infrared LED that monitors the driver’s condition, Mazda says. The system monitors the driver’s eyelids, counts the number of flashes and shows the mouth and face angle to detect drowsiness or fatigue. The driver will hear a warning if the system detects sleepiness.
Mazda3 will face a tough competition from Toyota’s Reformed Corolla, which sprays the previously ever compact with sporty styling, more power and more high-quality materials for the interior.
Mazda plans to offer the redesigned car in early 2019 in two body styles, sedan and hatchback.
