Had George Russell not appeared to complete 23 laps shaking Williams on Wednesday, Mercedes would have finished a test day as the toughest team for the first time in the V6 turbo hybrid.
In what turned out was a quiet start to the pre-season for Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, they ended 11 and 12 on the timetables. Bottas is 15th for the week overall, while Hamilton is 17. Only the troubled Racing Points and the largely absent Williams drivers were behind them with one day in the first week of testing.
