Grey’s anatomy latest episode “Silent All These Years” that was aired Thursday night, had received tons of praise from fans after showing an extensive detailed look at the procedure that is done to rape victims during the rape kit exam. The episode focused on a rape victim survivor called Abby, who comes to the hospital with a scar on her face. She is taken care of by Jo who later on, discovers signs of abuse all over the patient’s body. Giving the history of Jo’s abusive relationship with her husband, she jumps to the conclusion that the woman is being physically abused by her husband. However, the patient shortly reveals that she was attacked and raped after a night out in which drinking occurred, and for that reason, she doesn’t want to report it. Fearing the usual blaming and judgments that are usually set against rape victims. “We all know if I do that kit, it ends up in the back of some police station, ignored for years, while I sit there wondering when the bomb will go off, waiting to see if a jury of my peers will believe a woman who wore a skirt a few inches too short, who had a few cocktails too many at a bar last night after having a fight about laundry with her husband,” Abby emotionally declared when the doctors asked her to do the kit exam. “And you know the tequila I drank will make it my fault, and whoever did…

“And you know the tequila I drank will make it my fault, and whoever did this to me, whatever he drank, that’ll be his excuse,” she added.

The revelation, her words, the pain in her eyes, all portrayed what women actually go through everyday.

fortunately, Jo was able to talk her into taking the exam, encouraging her to speak up, convincing her that what happened is and never will be her fault.

After the kit is administered, all the female doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial line the hallway of the hospital, as Abby is wheeled into surgery, silently offering their solidarity and support in what has been one of the most powerful episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.

“Making scenes like this is what Shondaland is all about,” Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted on Friday. “So proud.”

The powerful scene of the detailed rape kit exam almost didn’t make it to the episode, Shonda Rhimes reveals that she has fought with ABC channel to keep the scene; as it is a moment that should be witnessed by all as it is n accurate treatment of sexual assault survivors.

The creators worked with RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, in order to make the content and language of the episode as accurate and sensitive as possible; which was indeed successful and touched millions of viewers.
