Google has just printed the security update in December for Android, and for Pixel users, this version contains over a dozen functional stains to improve performance and early bugs in Pixel 3 and 3 XL. Most importantly, the patch will fix the bad memory management that has so far caused the phones to close early background apps like Spotify.
You should be able to multitask without suddenly ending your music or podcast after installing the fix file. The annoying issue put an odd spotlight on Google’s decision to leave Pixel 3 with 4GB of RAM.
The update also includes many other optimizations and fixes. Several are related to the camera: Google says it has “Adjusted Auto Focus Behavior” and “Enhanced Camera Shutter Performance” on Pixel 3 and 3 XL. But both Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 will get “enhanced camera capture performance,” which may be Google’s way of saying that your photos will not disappear anymore. (There is nothing in this monthly patch about missing text messages, unfortunately.)
Other functional fixes relate to the pixel stand – with better keyword detection and always-enabled improvements – and Android Auto. Google says Android Auto Compatibility has been improved for pixels 2 and 3. There is an action that goes back to the original 2016 pixel: Google says that all generations will now experience enhanced unlock performance through Bluetooth devices.
The December patch will be available sometime today from your Pixel setup menu.
