Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in New York has hired several senior assistants for an expected presidential campaign, a sign that she is only sure to participate in the race against President Trump and that her entry may be imminent.

Ms. Gillibrand has recruited Meredith Kelly, former spokesman for the Democratic Congress Campaign Committee, to serve as communications director for her future 2020 campaign, two people familiar with the decision were said. Ms. Kelly was part of the chamber committee team that helped the party capture the majority in 2018 and oversee the group’s media strategy during the middle of the election.

Emmy Bengston, the former digital director of Gov. Gavin Newsom in California in his 2018 race has signed on as Ms Kelly’s assistant, who oversees the campaign’s digital operation. And Dan McNally, a former political director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, is expected to become a leading adviser to the campaign director.

The employment is part of a flurry of activities Gillibrand in recent weeks as the 2020 campaign is ongoing. Politico reported on Thursday night that she is preparing a trip to Iowa later this month and also reported that McNally was involved in the campaign.

Glen Caplin, a spokesman for Ms. Gillibrand, refused to comment.

With the fact that we actually retain new staff – rather than just conducting interviews or planning employee recruitment – indicates that Ms. Gillibrand is probably in the final stages of preparing for the 2020 race. When politicians raise or spend more than $ 5,000 on the candidacy, they only have 15 days to write paperwork that form a federal election commission campaign.

Depending on when she announces her decision, Ms. Gillibrand 52 may become the second high-profile democrat to participate in the competition, after Senator Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts. Ms. Gillibrand has signaled that she will run as a progressive and has been a particularly powerful advocate in the party on gender issues.

At least two other senators, Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey, are expected to announce the coming weeks, joining a field that can grow to dozens. Joseph R. Biden Jr., former Vice President, has also told us that he decides to make a decision each month and has leaned on running.

While she has a high profile in the news media, Mrs Gillibrand is not well known among democratic voters nationally. In a Quinnipiac University poll last month, 64 percent of Democrats said they did not yet know enough that she would form an opinion.

As a senator, Ms. Gillibrand relied on a tight knit team of advisors who have advised her for years and helped her navigate the appointment to the Senate in 2009, a special election to defend the seat in 2010 and a regularly planned Senate election in 2012. But she has been aggressive in order to Add their staff and compete with other democratic contenders for prized talent in the party.

Ms. Gillibrand’s expanded political law arose from that process. Prior to joining the Democratic Congress Campaign Committee, Ms Kelly worked as a spokesman for Senator Chuck Schumer in New York, the current Senate Secretary of State.

Ms. Bengston worked on digital communication for planned parenting and President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012. McNally was the campaign manager for Senator Michael Bennet in Colorado, one of Ms. Gillibrand’s colleagues who have also said he is considering running for president.
