Samsung is not shy about the ambitions of the Galaxy Fold. James Martin / CNET There's so much I want to say about Galaxy Fold, the foldable phone Samsung launched Wednesday in San Francisco, that I don't know where to start. I guess I'll start with the fact that Samsung just dampened Galaxy Fold on stage, but didn't give the journalists a chance to see, touch or even breathe on the phone's tablet hybrid nearby, not even behind a protective glass barrier. So I can only base my first impression on Samsung's scendemo and what I know about Folds specs (cruise to the end for all of them). Whatever it did, it made a big splash. Galaxy Fold in action. Samsung Galaxy Fold feels like a moonshot, and it's Samsung's masterpiece here. We just got enough information to be fascinated, but not enough to destroy the mystery. Although Galaxy Fold lacks the hype, Samsung – the world's largest answering machine – has managed to capture everyone's attention. The fold may not be a device that everyone owns, but what I can tell so far is a viable example of a completely new type of phone. Galaxy Fold feels like a moonshot, and it’s Samsung’s masterpiece here. We just got enough information to be fascinated, but not enough to destroy the mystery. Although Galaxy Fold lacks the hype, Samsung – the world’s largest answering machine – has managed to capture everyone’s attention. The fold may not be a device that everyone owns, but what I can tell so far is a viable example of a completely new type of phone.
At $ 1,980, Fold twice costs the starting price for Galaxy Note 9 or iPhone XS. When Samsung Mobile SVO Justin Denison announced the Galaxy Fold’s prize, the presentation hall spoke with audible gasps and groans (but I’m not surprised ). Denison did not wear it, but he pointed the pump by calling it a “luxury device”.
In the US, Galaxy Fold sells with AT & T and T-Mobile as of April 26. Global colors are Martian Green, Astro Blue, Cosmos Black and Space Silver. There will be 4G LTE and 5G versions.
Galaxy Fold consists of two screens: a 4.6-inch outside of the unit as it is closed as a book and the other one 7.3-inch screen that extends over “inside” when you open it to become a tablet.
We are still not sure if the smaller screen is made of glass or plastic, but we know that the inside screen is the first example of Infinity Flex Display, an ultra-thin polymer (plastic) that uses a new adhesive for which Samsung was developed. to laminate the many layers of the phone so that they can be bent and folded hundreds of thousands of times.
Samsung also needed to make Infinity Flex Display thinner than any other mobile display. It cuts the thickness of the polarization layer, which makes the screen readable, by 45 percent.
I’m interested in trying this because glass is usually more premium material than plastic – will it feel as responsive and smooth? CNET was the first to report that the company behind Gorilla Glass, Corning, has been working to createbut it is still in development.
Now we need to talk about the weight itself. Samsung said it made a hinge with fasteners hidden in the case. “Samsung” is etched on the hinge. It is difficult to tell exactly how flat the fold is, but from what we can see there is at least one small gap in the hinge end – stay still.
It would be disastrous to close or open the Galaxy Fold and see your apps’ teams or judges when you picked them up again on the second screen. Google’s mission is to ensure that there is a smooth handoff between the two so that apps are moved directly between the expanded view shown on the 7.3-inch screen and 4.6-inch screen.
To get the most out of a larger screen, you can open up to three separate apps at once, so an article, a video and your SMS app. We were also told in November that all apps can also give you up to three active windows when you are full screen. We have seen demos for Flipboard, but the feature will only get hold of if Samsung can successfully attract the developers of today’s best.
Samsung has placed six cameras around the Galaxy Fold: three in the back, two on the inside and one on the cover. These are the same sensors that we see on the Galaxy S10 phones (Galaxy S10 5G also has six, in a slightly different configuration). But it is clear that is for selfies and which ones to take portraits, landscapes, food shots and everything else.
I’m curious about how the image flow will be on the Galaxy Fold, since the camera arrangement onphone 2017 had you scrolling and relocating that two-screen device to take pictures. It was a hassle, and one that Samsung has hopefully thought out.

The thing with batteries is that they do not bend so well. However, if you do not balance the load, you will end up with a side-by-side phone such as ZTE Axon M. Samsung said it has solved the problem by putting a plain stiff lithium-ion battery on each side. The two lobes work together, like your brain, to give the Galaxy Fold 4.380mAh of power.
I’m still not over a $ 1000 phone, and my guess is that you don’t either. Samsung knows that most will not run and buy one. But some will. Galaxy Fold will appeal to rich early adopters who want to be on the bleeding edge of technology.
A phone that can open in a book is the ultimate status symbol, as it is instantly recognizable, especially if you buy it in Martian Green.

There is another population that Fold would also be interested in, and it is the app developers who want to test their programs on a folding unit. Say you’re doing a camera app that utilizes all six of the phone’s lenses. You have to supplement it on a folding phone with all the icing and sprinkling.
Samsung may have been the first major brand to announce a collapsible phone, but Galaxy Fold is not “in a field all its own. Unlike the Notin family with its big screen and Touch screen, competing foldable phones will flood in.
Xiaomi and Huawei are working on one, and Alcatel and Motorola are said to be just as good. Even Apple has filed patent applications for a foldable iPhone design.
Although the foldable telephone development does not agree with the usual, they are ready to lay the foundation for more in the future. Already in November last year, Samsung told us about the next challenge: rollable and stretchable screens.
Most industry analysts agree that folding phones become an inevitable part of the smartphone landscape in 2019 and beyond.
“This is the best way to deliver on that consumer demand, but it’s probably a multi-year process before pricing, software, apps and the product itself has kinks worked out,” says Stephen Baker, CEO of industry analysis at the NPD Group.
However, it is also a feeling that something other than is coming. “It is important that we move beyond units with folding screens as a solution that is looking for a problem,” says Ben Wood, chief researcher at CCS Insight.
Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is the first sunny step in that direction and drops or swims, that’s exciting stuff.
