The Galaxy A series seemed to lead to an interesting adventure when Samsung’s mobile director DJ Koh announced that the company first launched innovation in its mid-range phones. That was the case with the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9, Samsung’s first triple and quadruple camera phones. In China, Samsung only revealed the Galaxy A6 devices, which seemed to be just a regular mid-range Samsung phone. With the exception of the fact that it is not done by Samsung at all.

Yes, this is Samsung’s first “Original Device Manufacturer” (ODM) phone. That is, it’s a phone that carries Samsung’s name but was not made by Samsung itself. Unlike other smartphones and also its other Galaxy A models, Galaxy A6s were allegedly manufactured by the Chinese company Wintech, which ironically produces Xiaome’s phones.

This arrangement is not new or unusual on the smartphone market. BlackBerry-branded phones are now manufactured by TCL and the new generation of Nokia phones manufactured by HMD Global. In these cases, however, partnership and licensing are more open. In the case of Galaxy A6, Samsung still wants everyone to believe that it is done by Samsung.

In terms of specifications, Galaxy A6s can not be as interesting as its history. You get a smartphone running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 with 6GB of RAM and 64 or 128GB of storage. It has a 6-inch 2160 × 1080 18: 9 screen. Despite its midline line, it gets dual cameras on the backside, a 12 megapixel and a 5 megapixel. It does not run the latest Android 8.1, which is not surprising for a Samsung phone. Prices start at 1,799 RMB, around $ 260.

This new ODM venture raises some questions, especially for the Chinese smartphone market. For one, there will be a distinct difference in quality between this new ODM phone and Samsung’s usual Galaxy A phones? And more importantly, does this signal a new arrangement where Samsung will outsource its Chinese smartphones to another company? We will know carefully when and if there is a second ODM phone coming in the coming months.
