Three attackers were also killed in the attack on the consulate in the city’s high security zone, according to a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Pakistan.
The Balok Liberation Army, a separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack in a tweet including a photo of three unidentified men and the message: “Karachi: Fidayeen of BLA attacked the Chinese Embassy in Karachi.” CNN does not have independent confirmation of the group’s commitment.
Security was immediately rampaged at consulate all over Karachi, said sindh governor Imran Ismael to CNN.
Two of the four victims were uniformed police officers, according to Seemi Jamali, Emergency Officer at Jinnah Hospital. No Chinese citizens were among the dead, said the hospital.
Ahsan Jamil, a stock portfolio manager of an investment firm whose office faces the Chinese Consulate, told CNN that the shooting began at 9:1
5 local time (11.15 pm ET Thursday night) and lasted about 30 to 45 minutes.
He said the area was surrounded by schools, and the parents were detained by the school staff because of the shooting and explosions, but otherwise there were no “other signs of panic”. He said he saw police cars driving towards the area.
When the journalist Amir Latif, from Turkey’s Anadolu News Agency, spoke to CNN he was still able to hear a shot.
“The consulate is in a very strong guarded area, the burning continues and we can hear small blasts, which indicates that the attackers are still engaged to security forces,” Latif said.
“The fire continues and the police have not done anything official statement, but the eyewitnesses said there are three to four attackers, heavily armed attackers who tried to storm the Chinese consulate and still we can hear shots, “Latif said.
It is unclear whether the terrorists were within the association or near the consulate. 19659002] Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi later confirmed that the operation to secure the Chinese association was over.
“Our Chinese friends and officials – about 21 people – are all confident,” he told a media briefing.
The area is clear. Those who want to prevent peace in the country were brilliantly stopped by the young security chiefs in this country.
“Pakistan and China’s friendship can not be disturbed. Pakistan and China have common security attempts to prevent such attempts to destroy the work of the two countries.”
He added that he hoped to speak with his Chinese counterpart soon. “
The Balokistan Liberation Army (BLA) has implemented a low-level separatist rebellion against the state for almost two decades.
The organization, which grew out of anger over the state’s perceived monopoly on the province’s mineral resources, has previously killed and kidnapped Chinese engineers who work in The province.
Balokistan is at the heart of the multi-billion US-dollar cooperation agreement called the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
