Over the past week or so, almost all the time has been dedicated to the scattering Wild West epic Red Dead Redemption 2 . Rockstar’s latest game is so huge, so comprehensive that I did not let me play anything while I reviewed it. By 2018 it is not that easy to do. So many of the games I play now are those who have been matching in my daily routine. I feel I’m missing a check in my Animal Crossing camping or come in any match of Clash Royale . The feeling of FOMO is particularly evident in Fortnite .
It’s changing so much and so fast that a prolonged absence can make you feel like returning to a completely different game.
When I last played Fortnite the last major addition was a vehicle that lets you fall through walls and start players in the air. It was 1
0 days ago – and so much has been added since. The head shift has been the Halloween “Fortnitemares” event, which has filled the island with shopping samples. (They are definitely not zombies.) When you play, you will encounter purple, rocky plants that cure these creatures until you destroy them.
Fortnite has always been a game of killing other players, so this adds a whole new dynamic. It reminds me of Titanfall where even terrible players – like me – could get some deaths by taking out computer-controlled enemies. It’s also very unpleasant, thanks largely to the disturbing sound design, which reminds me of the game’s time-limited Thanos event. Even before you can see the monsters you will definitely hear them. It fits perfectly with the sixth season of the game, which has largely added a darker and more supernatural feel to Fortnite . Even more useful for casual Fortnite fans is a fundamental change in how the game is played: now that you fall from a long structure or jump off a cliff you can use your parachute whenever you want , in all game modes. It is good to prevent accidental deaths or to players who are usually doubtful to build up high during the fighting.
There are also other changes, especially with the game’s constantly evolving environmental history. When I left the game, the floating island – raised by my beloved interdimensional cube – moved slowly around the map, visited special places that were home to cryptic runes burned in the field. Now, however, the island has moved back to its starting point and has been split into several pieces, each of which is still flowing in the air. There is a big purple ball of light that connects the island fragments with a troubling bubbling pool in the sky.
Honestly, I have no idea what is happening.
When you play Fortnite regularly, you can take such changes in small doses, making them much easier to follow. It is one of the best things in the game. The way it is constantly evolving is its own kind of storytelling, one that is especially convincing if you keep an eye on the game. But, as I’ve learned, it does not take long to feel like you’re out of the loop.
To be fair, updates equal to “Fortnitemares” are not so common. But it’s about Fortnite : you never know what changes are coming, what they will be and what kind of impact they will have on the overall game. (Just ask for all the competitive Fortnite players who are upset by these great changes for the weekend’s major TwitchCon tournament.) When a whole lot of new things are added at the same time, the gaming feel makes it very different.
After some matches I get what happened, but it feels like I’ve missed something. I did not see how other players treated the monsters early, and I could not witness the floating island destruction as it happened. There is obviously something big to happen with the cube with the strange bolt of purple lightning. And with Red Dead now ready, there is no way I will miss it.
