WASHINGTON – Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s former personal lawyer who involved him in a system of paying hush money to two women claiming to have had business with him, has agreed to testify before the House Supervisory Committee next month and give “a complete and credible account” of his work for Mr. Trump.

Mr. Cohn’s decision to appear before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on February 7 sets the stage for a major public hearing that threatens to further damage the President’s image and can clarify the depth of his legal woes. Mr Cohen, a consignor to Mr. Trump when he was a real estate developer and presidential candidate, as well as informally president, was privileged by the murder of Mr Trump’s inner circle and key moments under the review of both Specialist Robert S. Mueller III and Federal Prosecutors in New York .

He could soon share them on national television under oath.

“To promote my commitment to cooperate and give the American people an answer, I have accepted the invitation of President Elijah Cummings to appear publicly on February 7,” Cohen said in a statement. “I look forward to having the privilege of becoming a platform to give a complete and credible account of the events that have occurred”.

Mr. Cohen pleaded guilty to the federal court in Manhattan in August to deceive taxes, make false statements to a bank and a campaign finance clause. In court, Cohen stated that violation was the result of payments he made on his previous client’s request to a woman who was prepared to become public during the 2016 campaign of a deal with Mr Trump earlier this year.

Since then, Mr. Cohen has spent more than 70 hours with federal prosecutors in Manhattan as well as with Mr Mueller, who is investigating Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election and Mr Trumpet’s campaign. In November, Mr. Cohen pleaded guilty to an extra charge – lying to Congress about how long the negotiations for a Trump Tower project in Moscow took place in 2016.

Cooperation has served him to Mr Trump’s ire, who has called Mr Cohen is a “weak person”. The president said he was not doing anything wrong with the campaign financing, and he accused his former lawyer of tricking prosecutors into trying to get a reduced sentence. In court applications, prosecutors have not named Mr Trump, referring to a “federal office candidate” and “individual-1”.

Asked during a Texas border visit if he was worried about Cohen’s plan to tell, Trump told reporters, “I’m not worried at all.”

It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors in New York or for Mueller would ask Cohen to continue discussing topics that are still under investigation. Nor was it clear when Cummings formally issued an invitation to testify.

On Thursday, Cummings said he could afford mr. Mueller’s office to ensure that he did not hinder his efforts.

“I want to make it clear that we have no interest in unduly interfering with all ongoing criminal investigations,” he said in a statement.

Mr. Cummings said in a brief interview on Thursday that he had known that Mr. Cohen would come for a while and had spoken to him briefly when he organized the hearing.

“He gets the chance to tell his side of the story, and we get the chance to ask him. The American people deserve it.”

In a CNN interview in December, Cummings compared Cohen’s appearance to John Dean, President Richard Nixon’s White House, which in 1973 appeared before a special Senate Committee investigating Watergate scandal involving him, senior officials and the president himself in defense of the 1972 burglary at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee.

“This is a water-specific torque,” said Cummings Dean, who he said “changed America” with his testimony.

It was unclear whether Cohen’s agreement to testify to the Supervisory Committee would exclude appearances, publicly or privately, before other house panels. [19659002] The newly installed presidents of at least two other panels, the courts and the intelligence officials have said they want to talk to Cohen about his work on behalf of Mr Trump. Representative Adam B. Schiff, the Democrat of California and the Information Committee chairman, said in an interview last week that he was in contact with Mr. Coh’s lawyer on a possible appearance.

In a statement on Thursday, Schiff said he was happy to see Mr Cohen appear in public, but would press for an attempt to secure another private appearance in front of his own committee “in the near future” to discuss issues related to Russia.

Democrats won back last year promising to keep Mr. Trump and his administration account and have begun to lay the groundwork for a wide range of investigations targeting his administrator’s policies and ethics, disappearing, Mr Trump’s operations and his campaign’s interactions with Russia. Mr Cohn’s appearance publicly, in front of national television cameras, will begin to fulfill this promise, but is likely to be just the first of a series of public testimonies that could be detrimental to the president.
