Former Los Angeles Angels player Luis Valbuena and former journalist Jose Castillo were killed in a car accident in Venezuela.
“We are saddened by the tragic news that Luis Valbuena and former Major Leaguer Jose Castillo have died in a car accident,” Major League Baseball said in a tweet .
Valbuena, 33 and Castillo, 37, played in a Venezuelan winter baseball league and were teammates at Cardenales de Lara, according to The Athletic .
The couple were in a car when their vehicles hit a rock and wrecked the road, reported the Orange County Register. Former Arizona Diamondback’s infringer Carlos Rivero drove the car and survived the accident.
“We are deeply sad to hear about the passport of former Angel Luis Valbuena and former MLB-born José Castillo. Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of sorrow, the angels said in one Tweet .
Valbuena played 11 seasons in the majors, which began his career in 2008 with Seattle Mariners. He played for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and the Angels under the Road. He last played for the Angels in the 2018 season, but released in August. He recorded a 2222 batting agent with 114 home runners and 367 RBI during his career.
Castillo played five seasons in the majors – from 2004 to 2008. He began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and then moved to San Francisco Giants before You end up with Astros. He recorded a .254 batting agent with 39 home runs and 218 RBI during his career.
