Walmart pilot will initially use human vehicles driven to simulate how a self-propelled vehicle would behave, Ford said. Ford has said that it expects to start commercial production of automated vehicles by 2021.

Ford and its partners use Miami as a test site for automated delivery service ideas and automated vehicle technology.

The new pilot project will provide customers with delivery of Postmates of goods ordered at Walmart stores. Brian Wolf, a CEO of Ford’s Autonomous Vehicle Unit, wrote in a blog post that companies will work in the coming “few months” to find out what goods can be delivered successfully, especially perishable foods.

It may require new vehicles or equipment for vehicles, Wolf wrote. Among the challenges that Ford has said is working on designing built-in storage systems that are easy for customers to open to pick up a pizza or package.

Post Comment, according to its website, also works in 385 American cities like Mexico. Walmart competes with the online retailer Amazon.com and other competitors to reduce the cost of delivering goods over which industry leaders call “last mile” to customers who order online.

Bypassing personal delivery of robotic driver drivers may reduce last mileage costs. But technology is still expensive and industry is still waiting for regulations that can help protect automated vehicle owners or manufacturers from liability claims.

Ford has emphasized the commercial use of autonomous vehicle technology, such as delivery of goods, as opposed to competitor General Motors, who works to build a taxi service on its GM Cruise Unit.

Ford is in discussions with German automaker Volkswagen about any investment in its self-propelled vehicle unit, feeling people who know the situation. No agreements have been made.

In July, Ford said it would create a new business unit, Ford Autonomous Vehicles, for renting its own vehicle. The automaker said it would invest a total of $ 4 billion in the unit until 2023.
