It is with a heavy heart that we have made this inevitable announcement today. The airline has faced several difficulties, including the latest nails in fuel and carbon dioxide costs, the latter deriving from the EU’s recently decided to exclude UK airlines from full participation in the emissions trading scheme.
These problems have undermined efforts to move the airline to profit. Current trading and prospects have also been seriously affected by the uncertainty created by the Brexit process, which has led to us not being able to secure valuable flight contracts in Europe and a lack of confidence in bmi’s ability to continue flying between destinations in Europe. In addition, our situation reflects greater difficulties in the regional aviation industry, which has been well documented.
Against this background, it has become impossible for the airline’s shareholders to continue its extensive program of financing for the business despite investments of over 40 million over the past six years. We really regret that this action has become the only option open to us, but the challenges, especially those created by Brexit, have proved insurmountable.
