Sergio Marchionne, former CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, who died earlier this year, honored the person of the year while two of Fiat Chrysler’s products – the Ram 1500 pickup and Jeep Wrangler – earned this year’s truck and SUV of the Year’s awards at the event.
This year’s car award was awarded to the new Genesis G70, a compact luxury prize from Hyundai’s newly formed luxury division.
The magazine writer acclaimed Marchionne’s leadership of both Fiat and Chrysler, and noted how he turned every company around as they approached the edge and combined them to create a new industrial power plant. He also remembered his urgency and demanding eye for products. The magazine noted Marchionne’s reputation to make designers and engineers rework their designs over and over until he felt they were right.
His demanding approach was shown in the two products that won awards this year and in Alfa Romeo Giulia, which was named the car of the year, according to the newspaper.
Only vehicles that are completely or substantially transformed for the model year are entitled to these awards. The vehicle is tested side by side and then assessed on the basis of six criteria: safety, efficiency, value, progress in design, technical excellence and performance of the intended function.
Ram Truck was tested on Fiat Chrysler’s own Arizona testing bases where temperatures regularly reached “well in triple numbers”, according to the newspaper. MotorTrend’s editors were impressed by the truck’s driving quality thanks to its sophisticated suspension, as well as its nicely decorated interior with tools and storage compartments for different uses.
The hit hit General Motors new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks, both of which were finalists for the prize. Trucks are huge profit makers for these companies and the struggle for buyers can be tough. A head to head-win against GM’s best new trucks gives the Ram pickup real bragging rights which will undoubtedly be good for marketing.
“It’s huge for Ram to win, but when you run the product and test it like We did, it was not close at all,” said Ed Loh’s editor Edward Edward, MotorTrend.
Jeep Wrangler, while being a brand new design, retains the unmistakable Wrangler appearance from 70 years to the original military jeeps. The new Wrangler gives better driving and driving skills and management characteristics, noted the magazine, without sacrificing any ability. Like Ram, it is also available with a new, mild hybrid system that uses batteries to store unnecessary power that can be used to help accelerate.
Wrangler is the most famous product from what is widely regarded as Fiat Chrysler’s most valuable brand by far – especially after Ferrari was spun as a separate company. Wrangler is central to Jeep’s image for rugged terrain. Engineers and designers faced the challenge of being true to it while the new Wrangler’s are as tasty as possible for those who drive it regularly on paved roads and highways.
The new Wrangler is good enough for it to make it a truly viable alternative to a more car-like crossover SUV , says Loh.
Hyundai winner, Genesis G70, is intended to compete directly against compact luxury performance cars like the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4. This marks the first time a Korean brand has won the car’s price for the year.
Hyundai and company siblings Kia have made great progress in recent years to improve the driving pleasure of their cars. Now they can credibly take the best German brands, “said Loh.
“It strikes all the right notes: Strong pulleys and a smooth chassis that is lots of fun, sporty exterior styling with strong graphics and a well-equipped interior,” says MotorTrends International Bureau of Angus MacKenzie.
