Tesla says the company has not received “a verdict, a testimony test or any other formal process,” but the Journal reported Friday that former Tesla employees have received appeals and requests for testimony.
Tesla fought for ramp up model 3 production as promised, afflicted with factory problems and reports of inappropriate working conditions. Musk set high goals and insisted on sticking to them, according to countless media reports.
Federal agents are investigating whether the company deliberately made public statements about impossible production targets, reported journal.
Shares of Tesla took a significant leg lower shortly after the report, but recovered to trade more than 3 percent up in the day.
In response to the Wall Street Journal Report, Tesla said in a statement:
Earlier this year, Tesla received a voluntary request for documents from the Justice Department regarding its public guidance for ramp 3 and we were cooperating to respond to it . We have not received a verdict, a testimony request or any other formal process, and there have been no further documentary requests from the Ministry of Justice for several months.
When we started the Model 3 ramp, we were transparent about how difficult it would be, openly declared that we could only go as fast as our least fortunate or least successful supplier, and we entered “production hell”. In the end, given the difficulties we did not foresee in this first-rate production ramp, it took us six months longer than we expected to meet our 5,000 units per week. Tesla’s philosophy has always been to set truthful goals ̵
1; not sandbagged goals that we would definitely surpass and not unrealistic goals that we could never meet. While Tesla is criticized when it is delayed when one reaches a goal, one should not forget that Tesla has achieved many goals which most doubted. We are hugely proud of the entire company’s efforts to make it through this difficult ramp and get us into volume production.
