“Baby Driver” star Eiza Gonzalez has joined the Universal’s “Fast and Furious” spinoff “Hobbs and Shaw” with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
The roll was a last minute addition and sources say exec’s favored Gonzalez, but scheduling has to be done with Legendary’s “Godzilla vs. Kong”, who has Gonzalez and is about to start firing.
Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby are also aboard David Leitch. “Fast and Furious” architect Chris Morgan wrote the script.
The movie will see the titular, often odd couple that goes together. It is unknown who Gonzalez will play.
Since his arrival in the fifth installment of the franchise, Universal has sought to find a way to spin Johnson John’s Hobbs character, given his popularity with fans. Statham joined the 7th series and, in view of chemistry between the two actors in 201
7’s “The Furious’s Fate,” Universal took plans to develop a spin-off. It hits theaters on July 26, 2019.
Johnson and his Seven Bucks Production partners, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, together with Statham and Morgan, produce for his eponymous production company. Kelly McCormick, Steve Chasman, Ainsley Davies and Ethan Smith will produce.
Exec VP for Production Mark Sourian and VP for Production Jay Polidoro will monitor the project at Universal.
Gonzalez has been rolling since her breakout in Sonys “Baby Driver” and has a handful of upcoming projects that will bow over the next year, starting with Robert Zemecki’s “Welcome to Marwen” movie debut this Christmas. She follows it with the Fox movie “Alita: Battle Angel” and “Paradise Hills”, which just came to Sundance.
She recently finished production on the Sony project “Bloodshot” and is also linked to the star in the “King Fury” movie.
