COLUMBUS – After all the broken records, a season full of accumulated awards and a more dynamic performance in the Big Ten championship, Dwayne Haskins has another big trophy within reach.
Ohio State quarterback is the finalist for Heisman Trophy and was invited on Monday evening to the presentation of the most famous hardware in college football this weekend in New York.
Redshirt sophomore will be united with the Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma dual-threat weapon Kyler Murray, two friends of his who may both have better odds to win but get subdued late thanks to the remarkable closing distance from Haskins.
“It would mean the world [to be there]”, said Haskins on Sunday. “Quarterbacks, we are all alpha men, we all compete against each other in all camps and we all know each other. Kyler comes from high school was the best quarterback in the country. Tua in elite 1
1 camp was like a god. In the same conversation with them, I make myself feel like I’m setting up the work to be considered the best quarterback in the country.
“I have great respect for these guys.”
Haskins has commanded a lot of himself during his only season as a starter for Buckeyes, the rewriting of the discs apparently each turn while standing for 51 touchdowns, more fitting turns than any quarterback in the country and leading the program to another conference champion.
In addition, Haskins built itself in a leading Ohio state that could count When he became more comfortable with his responsibility to set the tone offensive. And at the end of the season he even got a full-throated approval from Urban Meyer, which is remarkably hard to earn from the Buckeyes coach.
Haskins is the first Ohio State player invited to the ceremony since Troy Smith lifted the 2006 statue, honored partly by cutting two of the best defenses in the Big Ten with 11 combined touchdowns to claim both division and conference queues.
“It’s one of the best achievements in the last two weeks of college football history,” said Meyer. “I’ve been lucky. I’ve been there with Alex Smith. I’ve been there with [Tim] Tebow three times. I thought the other guys should have had a chance. I do not know why they’re going to list that. guys. JT [Barrett] thought I should have gone. Braxton Miller a year thought I should have gone. It’s an incredible experience for the players to bring them.
“But [Haskins] goes one way or another. I fly him there myself. The way he plays and his statistics against the other quarterbacks, he has to go to New York. I do not know if he will win it because I do not know who makes those decisions.
The votes are now.
Haskins made the clip as finalist and he can not win it without being invited to New York first.
