Dream Chaser made solid progress on Commercial Crew milestones. The only spot on his report card was a failure of the landing equipment at a landing test at the Dryden Flight Research Facility in California.

The test was designed to verify and validate Dream Chaser’s low-atmospheric aerodynamics, flight control, approach, flare and landing and landing systems.

During this test, the space plane flew toward the ground and landing runway for about one minute after release.

As it approached the runway and the landing gear was deployed, the left landing unit failed to fully distribute, resulting in the vehicle knocking off the track 22L at Edwards. The landing gear was donated especially by a hunting jet and was not a specific part of the Dream Chaser hardware.

After the test extraction of Dream Chaser showed that while the craft was affected by minor injuries, the crew chamber was intact and all its systems were still operating. Inadvertently, the landing equipment erroneously showed Dream Chaser’s ability to protect its crew / cargo safely and survive a partial “landing equipment failure scenario” on landing.

The decision was controversial and led to a commercial staffing capability (CCtCap ) contract amounts protested from the SNC after missing a record of $ 6.8 billion – of which the lion’s share was awarded to Boeing.

SNC’s protest statement pointed to the source selection command with reference to serious issues and inconsistencies.

“In its 51-year history, the SNC has never faced a legal challenge at a public contract price. However, in the case of the CCtCap award, NASA’s own source selection and debrief indicate that there are serious issues and inconsistencies in the source selection process. There is no alternative but to launch a legal challenge.

“SNC’s Dream Chaser proposal was the second lowest price proposal in the CCtCap competition. SNC’s proposals also achieved qualifications that were comparable to the other two proposals. In fact, the highest ranked and lowest ranked offers of a possible 1 million points were distinguished by a smaller amount of total points and other factors were equally comparable. “

The protest was finally unsuccessful. Dream Chaser repeated the test in 2017, this time nailing the landing and rollout at Edwards Air Force Base.

Dream Chaser would then continue to get a NASA contract via its cargo variant and has passed milestones before its debut launch on an Atlas V, which is supposed to be done in early 2021.

When the vehicle takes flight, it will look a little different than the latest designs, with SNC decided to change the thermal protection system (TPS) design by adding more white tiles to the craft.

SNC noted that while the change was to help the obvious requirements of TPS at the reinsertion, it also adds more protection against MMOD (MicroMeteoroid and Orbital Debris) threats

From paperwork, Dream Chaser recently called NASA’s Integrated Review Milestone 5 (IR5), an important status control for SNC’s results of a number of different ground and flight operations. The cargo handling operations have been part of the ground operation testing.

“Our Dream Chaser team continues to successfully implement milestones as we move closer to getting the spacecraft to space,” said Fatih Ozmen, SNC’s owner and CEO at the time of the transition. IR5. “The orbital spacecraft is being built and this milestone shows that the vehicle continues to provide important reviews and makes great progress.”

SNC then released rare images of the vehicle in a video – especially the pressure vessel – under construction at Lockheed Martin’s famous Skunk Works.

The video showed the legacy, albeit with obvious changes, between the dream crew and cargo versions – with the latter allowing a much larger capacity of cargo massage, which will be its main job under CRS2.

In particular, Dream Chaser’s downmass will be taken directly from the ISS to a runway, such as the Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF), enabling faster processing of critical experiments. This is an important part of “different redundancy” compared to other vehicles.

“While we may not show it publicly, we continue to work with the crew through an agreement with NASA,” noted the SNC in an acknowledgment response . “We actually meet with the Commercial Crew Program regularly and short milestones to them through that agreement.”

Depending on how much work is done on the crew Dream Chaser, NASA – theoretically – could provide funding to ramp up the work on Dream Chaser crew vehicle and create a backup option for additional problems with the two primary commercial crew cars.

Despite the problems with Crew Dragon and Starliner, NASA is much more likely to continue to buy more Soyuz flights to ensure it can launch US astronauts to the ISS and provide an uninterrupted US presence on the orbital record.
