Heart patients should move around every 20 minutes for an eight hour period, according to a newspaper presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Toronto, an event where visiting experts from the European Society of Cardiology participate in joint scientific sessions with the Canadian cardiovascular society.

Heart patients spend most of their awake hours sitting down, but persistent sedentary for long periods can shorten their lives, suggests research. Taking breaks and burning more than 770 calories a day should help prolong their lives, “said Ailar Ramadi, postdoctoral doctor of the Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and author of the latest paper.

He proposes simple activities that stand up and go at a relaxed pace. “There is much evidence now when sitting for long periods is bad for health,” said Ramadi. His study enrolled 1

32 patients with coronary artery disease and an average age of 63 years; 77% were men. The participants had an armband activity monitor for an average of 22 hours a day for five days.

This is not the first doctor to effectively recommend going to a longer life. Going at an average rate was linked to a 20% decrease in lethality risk versus slowing, according to a study published earlier this year in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. A similar result was found for the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

The study was a collaboration between universities in Sydney, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Limerick and Ulster. The linked death record with the results of 11 population-based studies in U.K. between 1994 and 2008 where the participants reported their walking speed. Medium walkers 60 years or older experienced a 46% reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

A separate study from Harvard University concluded that you can add 10 years to your life by eating a healthy diet for 30 minutes or more a day, maintaining a healthy weight – a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 – Never smoke and drink only a moderate amount of alcohol. It analyzed 34 years of data from 78,000 women and 27 years data from 44,000 men.
