Derek Fisher will have a second chance of coaching, but this time it will be with Los Angeles Sparks of WNBA according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN . His initial press conference will take place Friday.
This will be Fisher’s second coaching job since his retirement from playing in 2014. He famously took the job as head coach in New York Knicks right after his retirement. It was there in New York where he was reunited with his old coach, Phil Jackson, but in different capabilities.
As president of Knicks basketball operations, Jackson would bring his own to lead his team in the future. Jackson pressed Fisher to heavy use of the outdated triangle crash. Of course, each team uses concepts of the triangular break in today’s game, but it can not survive as the main set as a team runs longer. The game is too different nowadays.
Fortunately for Derek Fisher, there will be no pressure to drive the triangle as Sparks head coach. That said, Fisher is a midseason firing after compiling a 40-96 record in one-plus seasons losing his job in New York.
Further, Fisher’s employment as Knick’s head coach included a bizarre domestic spat with former teammate Matt Barnes and his foreign wife, Gloria Govan.
It’s a little surprising that Sparks takes a guy with a checkered past and a brutal loss of profit as head coach. Perhaps Fisher’s reputation is still intact in LA, but the move is a main scratch anyway.
