CNN reported on Saturday that vice president. Scott Stearney was found dead in his home in Bahrain.
ADM. John Richardson, the chief executive officer, told CNN on Saturday that Stearney was not investigated when he asked.
“No. No investigation. No wonder … It’s a reasonable question, but I’m not aware of anything,” says Richardson.
CBS News was the first to report that Stearney’s death was an obvious suicide.
“This is devastating news for the Stearney family, for the team in the fifth fleet and for the entire fleet,” told Richardson CNN on Saturday. “Adm. Stearney was a decorated professional and devoted dad, a devoted man and a good friend.”
“I would just pray that everyone will hold the Stearney family in their thoughts and prayers as they review this and perhaps also to respect their integrity as they navigate over these very, very difficult streams,” he added.
The US Navy’s Bahrain-based Naval Command, which includes the fifth navy, oversees operations in areas such as the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The command is considered critical to US security interests in view of the challenges of Iranian and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, both of which regard the United States as potential threats to shipping in the region.
A huge amount of commercial freight, including large amounts of oil and gas, travels through the water monitored by the fifth fleet.
Stearney, a born in Chicago, graduated from Notre Dame in 1
982 before being appointed officer in the Navy and later served as a F / A-18 strike fighter pilot.
Prior to taking command of the fifth navy in May, he held several senior officials, including commanding a hit strike group and acting as chief executive of the US Central Command.
