Chinese spies stole NSA hack tools, report finds

At the end of March, New York State’s capital, Albany, confessed that it had been beaten with ransomware on a Saturday – a typical choice, since hackers calculate attacks can do more damage when IT staff is not working.

The city announced the attack the day it was discovered but failed its severity, and announced that it had only affected a handful of city services including the issuance of marital and birth certificates. Many of these problems were cleared at the beginning of the work week.

However, City Hall did not mention that the Albany Police Department had been significantly affected.

“We were essentially preoccupied for a whole day,” Gregory McGee, a patrolman who is vice president of the Albany Police Department’s union, told CNN at that time.

“All of our incident reports, all of our crime reports, are all digital,” McGee said, requiring cops to write down everything that happened on paper. They turned out to work and had no access to personnel plans.

How the Mueller investigation was hindered by encryption apps and vanishing messages

“We were like, who working today? ” McGee said. “We have no idea what our workforce is, who should be here.”

The mayor agency in Albany did not respond to several status update requests on the attack, but a spokesman had previously said the city would make an announcement when it had been cleaned.

Legislation was also targeted at Texas in March when the Fisher County Sheriff Office was infected and lost the ability to connect to a state law enforcement database.

Last month, Genesee County, Michigan, which includes the city of Flint, announced it was finally ransomware-free, after an attack effectively shut down the county tax department for most of April.

First attack 2013

[19659002] The first known small government Ransomware infection struck small town Greenland, New Hampshire, in 2013 but the number of attacks did not explode until 2016, when there were 46.

The number fell to 38 year 2017 – guiding the worldwide reduction of ransomware infections – before they rose to 53 last year.

Industry estimates indicate that ransomware attacks cost thousands of dollars each year, but it is difficult to specify an exact number of costs since there is no comprehensive record of attacks worldwide and not all are reported.
