Corn Domestication may have taken thousands of years

December 16, 2018 Science 0 Views WASHINGTON, DC- According to a report Science News the maize plantation began in southern Mexico about 9000 years ago and continued in Mexico and the southwest Amazon for several thousand years. It had previously been found that maize denomination was relatively fast in southern Mexico. Logan Kistler of Smithsonian Institution and his colleagues reconstructed the genetic history of the maize plant by analyzing and comparing the genres of 108 varieties of modern maize, 11 samples taken from ancient maize residues and a sample obtained from ancient theosinte, the wild ancestor of the modern maize plant. The study suggests that when the ancestors of modern corn were transported to South America from Mexico more than 6,500 years ago, it still has many teosin genes. Kistler suspects that farmers in southwestern Amazonia continued the process of domestication by planting the partially domestic maize with rice and cassava in soil that had been enriched with coal, compost and other ingredients.
