WASHINGTON – The ketogenic or “keto” diet is defined by healthline.com as a very low carb, high fat content that shares many similarities with Atkins and other popular low-carb diets.

By drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat, the body puts the diet in a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, the body burns fat for energy.

As a new year, giving new resolutions for health and fitness, some may consider the popular keto lifestyle. Anthony Gustin, founder and CEO of Perfect Keto, told CNN in September that “growth was quite wild” and added that his company averaged 20 percent each month over the past year.

But here’s the million dollar issue: Is it keto diet safe?

Best-selling author and former host of “The Biggest Loser” Jillian Michaels says no.

“Here they are not saying about keto,” Michaels said. “It has a lot of oxidative stress on the body.”

“There is no calorie restriction, lots of animal fats, lots of saturated fats. We are studying after studies that diets like this are straight years of our lives [up to seven years].”

Keto Lifestyle, she said, shortens telomeres and starve micromolecules. “Insulin sensitizer # 1

does not require an emergency emergency for your body like keto,” said Michaels. “… it’s really exercise.”

Michael’s latest book is “The 6 Keys: Unlock Your Genetic Potential for Uneven Power, Health and Beauty.”

Those who want to change their eating habits to throw a few pounds can benefit from taking Michaels recommendation: implementing the Mediterranean diet to get the benefits of the ketodite without the negative side effects.

“Do not eat too much, eat on a particular schedule, create a fasting period overnight and do your best to work in foods that are very rich in micronutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, prebiotics and so forth to be the best program period – end of history, “she said.

“It’s not me who takes it. It’s science, just like two plus two equal to four.”
