Chronicles of an announced death: Russia blocks Telegram because of encryption

It was news that would have to come sooner or later . The Russian government has a serious problem with Telegram because of the encryption, because it prevents access to conversations and messages from its users. This access, unfortunately for the Putin government, goes against Telegram’s policies , and Pavel Durov, its founder, always He has been firm in his decision not to give in to pressures before. But the day has arrived: Telegram will be blocked in Russia imminently.

This has been ruled by a Moscow court , which has approved the request of a media regulator Russian through which the immediate blocking of the app is demanded. The reason, as we have already mentioned on more than one occasion, is that Durov refuses deliver the Telegram encryption keys , something necessary so that the security forces can “Monitor potential potential terrorists.”

If requested by the authorities, in Russia it is mandatory that the providers of messaging services reveal how to decrypt the communications of their users, as well as being obliged to store the messages. That caused Telegram to be fined 14,000 euros last year – Urban Techno

The “problem” is that, according to Telegram, the app -or service- was developed in such a way that nor do they themselves have access to the encryption keys of their users. This is, precisely, the strong point of encryption in the messaging: that the organism / entity that controls the app can not unlock said encryption. That and nothing would be exactly the same. The Russian government said that Pavel Durov should deliver the keys before April 4 , date that already expired 9 days ago.

After the deadline, the main security agency of Russia, the FSB (Federal Security Service) has not been cut in cataloging Telegram as the messaging app chosen by “International terrorist organizations in Russia” , using as an example the suicide bomber who killed 15 people in the St. Petersburg subway in April last year, he used the Durov app to communicate with his buddies . What they do not say is that, according to Reuters, the Russian authorities also use Telegram to communicate.

While media regulator Roskomnadzor accused Telegram of failing to comply with legal requirements, the Telegram lawyer, Pavel Chikov , defended himself saying that this attempt to stop the service was “unfounded” and that “The requirements of the FSB to provide access to private user conversations are unconstitutional […] and can not be met technically and legally”.

The date on which the service will stop functioning in Russia is not known , but it is clear that it will be over the next few days. If you are a user of the app and you do not live in Russia you do not have to worry, since the servers are out of the country and, in principle, should not affect you. We will inform when we have more information.

We update with the statements of Pavel Durov:

The founder of Telegram has pronounced about it in its official Telegram channel with the following words:

The power that local governments have over IT corporations is based on money. At a given moment, a government can block its actions by threatening to block the sources of revenue from its markets and force these companies to do strange things (remember how last year Apple moved the iCloud servers to China). At Telegram, we have the luxury of not worrying about revenue sources or ad sales. Privacy is not for sale, and human rights should not be compromised by fear or greed.
