The control of the ionosphere has become an ambitious project for some military forces because it has the ability to interfere with communications from enemy satellites. For example, the United States was involved in a multimillion dollar project called the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, also known as HAARP, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska, and is funded by the US Military and Defense Department in 1993. HAARP was later transmitted from the US Air Force to the University of Alaska Fairbanks on August 11, 2015.
The use of such practices over the ionosphere has caused concern among critics. They claimed that these tests could affect the functioning of people’s brain or stimulate weather and natural disasters (also Sen. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez once said that the United States used this technology to cause the earthquake in Haiti in 2010), but others reject these claims as merely conspiracy theories. Faculty members at the University of Alaska Fairbanks have noted the amount of information that debunks some myths around the experiment.
“It’s an exquisite facility. It’s the best of its kind in the world, costing about $ 290 million to build and the university got it for free, so we’re trying to use it to do basic research in the jonosphere,” the university’s PR- Chief Sue Mitchell told Web Center 11 in August.
While some people may worry about artificial disturbances over their heads, other researchers stressed that the energy released into the ionosphere is not intended to trigger a catastrophic event over the globe. “Such studies must strictly adhere to ethical guidelines,” said Xidian University Professor Gong Shuhong Post . “Whatever they do, do not harm the people who live on this planet.”
Test results appear at a time when the United States switches to create a space strength. Since both China and Russia have developed lasers and anti-satellite missiles, the Trump administration announced Monday that it will launch a space command this week while the Pentagon completes its space management proposal, CNN reported.
