Boston Celtic’s early season match continued Wednesday night with a loss of 117-109 for the New York Knicks. Down as much as 26, Celtics made a big comeback in the fourth quarter, but fell short, largely due to a snap shot by Trey Burke. Now only 9-9 of the season there will be much to discuss with regard to Celtic’s inability to meet expectations.
At the same time there will also be a lot of discussion about one of Kyrie Irving’s postgame quotes, where he made it clear that he does not celebrate Thanksgiving. MassLives Tom Westerholm was in place:
Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving had stopped talking about the team’s frustrating 1
17-109 loss for New York Knicks and made his way out of scrum when a reporter wanted him a happy Thanksgiving.
Irving politely thanked the reporter and then added that he did not celebrate Thanksgiving.
“(Expletive) Thanksgiving,” says Irving.
Irving confirmed NBC Sports Boston Abby Chin afterwards that his resistance to Thanksgiving is rooted in his native American legacy.
While it may be surprising to hear Irving’s hard thoughts about the holiday, it is important to remember the context here. Irving has native American heritage because his grandmother was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and his late mother was adopted from the tribe when she was young.
During the summer, Irving, who has a tattoo of the standing Rock Sioux Tribal logo on the neck, went through a name ceremony with the tribe along with his sister. He got the name “Little Mountain.”
