Huawei Chief Economist of Chinese Technology and Telecom Detector has been arrested in Canada at the request of US authorities and faces extradition to the United States.
The Canadian Justice Department arrested Wanzhou Meng in Vancouver on Saturday and US officials want Canada to hand over its agent, Representative Ian McLeod said in an email sent to Business Insider. She will be given a citizen’s hearing on Friday, he said.
“Because there is a ban on publishing, we can not provide further details at this time,” McLeod said, adding: “The ban was sought by Ms. Meng.”
Both The Global and Mail and South China Morning Post reported earlier that Meng had been suspected of violating US trade sanctions against Iran.
A Huawei spokesman did not respond immediately to Business Insider’s request for comment.
Huawei is one of China’s most prominent technology companies ̵
1; a major telecommunications company, and the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer. Its units have been under the control of US authorities over spy-filled fears, and the arrest of their CFO has the potential to further increase tensions between the two countries under a growing trade war.
US authorities have applied for Huawei since at least 2016 to indicate United States shipment products to Iran and other countries in violation of US export and sanction laws, told Reuters in April.
