Bravesna is stuck among the NL elite in 2019 after receiving Josh Donaldson and Brian McCann

Atlanta Braves heated the coils in a hot oven on Monday by agreeing a couple of contracts in a year. As a result, the third bassman Josh Donaldson for a reported $ 23 million and veteran detainee and former Brave Brian McCann made a much more modest covenant .

Bravesna is of course the ruling NL East champs. By 2018, they turned to the title of the division even though they were heavy offenses underdogs to the citizens, and they did what was generally a young, high-rise roster. As such, Braves has one of the strongest long-term prospects for any team in baseball, but these two targeted additions lead their prospects to focus. As it turns out, it is also quite strong.

Now we will look into where Braves is after his big Monday …

Donaldson signing is a well-calculated risk

Bravesna gained good production from Johan Camargo at the third base last season, but when you have Chance to get past MVP on a yearly deal, do it. Donaldson has been struggling with calf problems for much of the last two seasons, and he did not really hit before being traded from Blue Jays to the Indians. However, with Cleveland, Donaldson beat more in line with his top standards (1

46 OPS +). Yes, the sample size was small (60 plates) but it was remarkable to see something close to Donaldson when it came to production and contact quality.

Yes, Donaldson is 33, but he can still put up big power while being selective on the plate and playing at least an average third base. There is also a real hope of getting rid of the Rogers Center Tower, helping Donaldson’s lower half to be well. Besides all, there is obviously a lot of incentives for him to be healthy and productive considering he will be back in the free trade market next winter. There is a risk to Braves, but if Donaldson spikes his forecasts while keeping himself generally healthy, he will motivate the price tag and then some.

McCann does not need to carry the load behind the plate

McCann did not really beat last season, but the 34-year-old is just two seasons away from a 106 OPS + for Astros with 18 homes in 97 games. Of course, McCann is not a daily detector – he has not captured more than 1,000 innings since 2015 – but he does not have to do it at this time. This is because Braves also have the terminally underrated Tyler Flowers on roster. In addition to being a skilled defender, Flowers also has a .360 OBP in the last three seasons. As a right hand, he makes a natural peloton with left-handed McCann. In other ways, Bravesna has quite an enviable catch depth right now.

The rotation is potentially good

Last season, Braves ranked second in NL in rotation ERA and a respectable seventh in rotation FIP . Brandon McCarthy and (probably) Anibal Sanchez will not be back, leaving Braves with this likely starting five …

  1. Mike Foltynewicz
  2. Julio Teheran
  3. Kevin Gausman
  4. Sean Newcomb
  5. Touki Toussaint

Of these, Gausman is the oldest statesman of 27 years and 324 days. Bravesna last season gave 13 different pots, so the depth is obviously important, which is for each team. On that front, Braves has a mother of high upward young arms that can be locked in when injury or inefficiency strikes out. Luiz Gohara, Mike Soroka, Kyle Wright, Kolby Allard, Max Fried Kyle Wright and at some point Joey Wentz. All of these names were ranked by at least one major service among the 100 biggest prospects in baseball that came in last season, and everyone is or will soon be ready for duty at the highest level.

There is some rare internal depth, which means that Braves can safely put out the city for free agent launchers. Atlanta’s latest deep rebuilding focused heavily on pitching, and the fruits of that effort will help them greatly in the coming season (and beyond).

They Still Have Some Needs

Right now, Braves Camargo has penciled in as the premier runner. In fact, he is best used as a super-sub and temporary submission for Donaldson in the third. In two seasons at Camargue, Camargo has spent time at third, short, second and left, and apparently, Braves believes that he can work properly. Throw in its above average flat production, and the soonest 25 year old has the potential to be Ben Zobrist Lite or maybe even go full Zobrist in the coming years. Having that kind of weapon improves roster flow, but considering that the changing Camargo is much better from the right side of the plate, he may be stretched out as a regular. That’s also because he’s not a platformer with Adam Duvall.

Bravesna could then use a left-handed battlefield. Ambitious minds will run into the name Bryce Harper, and in fact he has been informally linked to Bravesen in the past. On the other hand …

So much for that, probably. To withdraw Nick Markakis, provided he is willing to accept a pelargonroll and a short-term business, is an opportunity. Other options include Carlos Gonzalez and Lonnie Chisenhall.

As for the bullpen, it needs that work. Last season, the Atlanta Relief Corps ranked 10th in NL in Bullpen ERA and Eighth in FIP . It’s suboptimal, especially for a team of designs on the World Series. Bravesna should be in play, such as Joe Kelly and Andrew Miller or Zach Britton (I would avoid Craig Kimbrel, because he seems like a graduation candidate 2018 and later). David Robertson can also be a reasonable addition. The above-mentioned gluten of young entrees can also be dropped for help. In the case of commander, Arodys Vizcaino and A.J. Minter has up and Darren O & # 39; Day is a recurring candidate. It’s a mix-and-match approach that may require shuffling as the season goes by, but Braves has enough arms and resources to build a better device.

If they meet these needs, they may be the best team in NL

There is obviously a lot of reliance on where Bryce Harper and Manny Machado end up and whatever results Dodgers, Cubs and Brewers will have something to say about “NL best team on paper. ” However, Bravesna is in a position to have a strong fall.

Ronald Acuna may already be the best player in the National League in 2019 projections, and he only played 111 matches last season. Promise of a complete campaign from Acuna moves the needle to Braves. Ozzie Albies and Dansby Swanson have probably not found their respective ceilings. Throw in the depth of rotation and what’s one of the best one-through-four hitters in baseball, and Braves looks like the heavy favorites in NL East (and that’s the case even though Phillies let dollars fly this winter).

Even Bravesna won 90 matches last season, but their baseline may be a bit higher. Per race differential they played more like a 92-winning team. Look at the BaseRuns positions available on FanGraphs, which corrects for some of the sequencing and clustering effects inherent in the race differential, and you will find that braves played more like a 92-winning team at that level. In other words, their 2019 baseline is a bit higher than their record would suggest. Add, say 40 new games from Acuna and then Donaldson plus young arms later in their development, and maybe you’re talking about a team with a 95-100 win projection.

GM Alex Anthopoulos is very unlikely to finish, but Monday’s events and the already strong Braves state make this a potential power plant in the coming season.
