“Beautiful Nightmare” Crab Sported Lobster Shell, Shrimp and Soccer Eyes

An old crab that lived during the age of the dinosaur was so strange, paleontologists call it the crab of the world. This newly discovered critter called Callichimaera perplexa which means "confusingly beautiful chimera" – had a hodgepodge of body parts. That name refers to the mythical chimera of the Greek mythology, which had a lion's head, a goat's body, and a snake's tail. But in contrast to the mythological version, this bizarre chimera was actually: It had mouth of a shrimp, the claws of a modern frog crab, a lobster shell and the paddle-like appendages to a sea corps, the researchers found. His eyes were so giant that it would be like a man with a pepper ball size, said study senior researcher Javier Luque, a postdoctoral fellow in paleontology at Yale University and Alberta in Alberta, Canada. After much study, he found that critter was a strange quarter-scrap that lived about 95 million to 90 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. Within a few years he heard stories of similar fossil crabs discovered in Wyoming and Morocco. Soon, he had more than 70 copies of this small crustacean, including children, adults, men and women.

Considering that these crabs were found in such different places and environments, they were probably very adaptable, Luque said. C. perplexa is so extraordinary, it forms a whole new branch of the evolutionary tree for crabs, he added.

In addition to looking like a mixture of different animals, this swimming crab also looked like a combination of baby and adult parts. For example, cultured individuals had large, unoccupied compound eyes; curved claws; leg-like mouthpieces; an exposed tail; and a long body – all seen in crab larvae.

“I call it my beautiful nightmare because it was so beautiful and frustrating” to find out, Luque said. shows that “true crabs” lost and reevolved their bodies many times during history. 19659002] The study was published online today (April 24) in the journal Science Advances.
