A YouTuber named TheParryGod has created a short film called “Fate”, which filmically tells the story of Dark Souls . It’s incredibly beautiful. If you look at “The Fate”, the whole plot of Dark Souls will spoil you. The whole thing. You have been warned.
TheParryGod’s video is what people from the deep time on the internet may recognize under the name “machinima”. TheParryGod records video of the game, but they do it in a way that utilizes graphical modifications and camera tools to capture the best angle in a given situation.
This allows TheParryGod to make great these great moments of loneliness, as this short scene of Gaping Dragon just stands around. I think it’s amazing.
What I like so much about this movie is that it really leaks into Dark Souls’ ambivalence of destiny and chance. The chosen undead is associated with linking the fire, but it also seems that the chosen undead sticks into a lot of things. Problems arise, and the chosen undead solves them.
What seems important is how you want to summarize these events, not what they really are, and I appreciate that a movie made by Dark Souls does not try to redact how to “read” these moments in the game .
Unlike a lore explainer video, “The Fate” only shows what happened to the chosen undead, and you are free to take it as a viewer as opposed to being Sherlock Holmes in a fictional universe. As much as I like to talk Dark Souls lore, I would like to emit the interpretation gas a bit and just experience this oblique story for what it is.
If you like this video you should check out “Humanity”, a movie that TheParryGod did about Dark Souls III .
