I don’t understand early risers! I can’t wrap my head around the idea of waking up before 11 and get going with the daily mundane duties productively. I’ve been trying to be an early bird since freshman college, since it’s the key to become a millionaire according to some Buzzfeed article, and failed..
I’d rather sleep for a couple more hours than attending an 8 am lecture, even if it means losing attendance grades.
Now, I am a grownup adult and I’ve been working full time for over two years now and it hasn’t been easy.
As the night owl I am, I had to come up with a routine to save me couple of minutes of sleep, get to work in time and be as productive as possible.
A trick as old as time. Turns out mom was right after all when she nagged about getting your bag ready the night before sleep, and that’s exactly what you are going to do as a responsible adult. Get your work bag ready, keys and wallet in place, prepare the meal you’re taking to work in a box. Sometimes, I go as far as keeping the clothes I’ll wear in the morning next to my bed so that I can change first thing in the morning, then actually start washing up and getting ready.
That will save you a lot of morning hustle from deciding what to wear to making sandwiches.
Best friends forever. You and Coffee.
You probably stumbled upon one of those articles talking badly about Coffee (a.k.a your bff), but you know your brain isn’t functional until it’s caffeinated.
Make your own coffee at work and get your blood running through your sleepy body moving around the kitchen.
I like to start my morning with a track I found online that relieves anxiety, it helps me calm down and get into work/inspiration mode without losing it and start killing everyone at work (Just kidding). Make a good work playlist, a one that wouldn’t sooth you back to sleep, just don’t let your music blow all over the office, not everyone would appreciate your taste.
Sitting for 8 hours straight on a desk doesn’t just hurt my body, it breaks my free hyperactive soul.. so I move! I walk around the office, move my muscles, make another coffee or say hi to random people. During those very short breaks I give to myself, I like to check something different online, maybe the latest piece of news, a scientific breakthrough or just a 10 second funny video. Anything to avoid boredom, work routine and back pain.
That’s basically the worst advice anyone could ever give you, unless you nap during work breaks; and if you don’t, work naps are always good naps anyway; they renew your energy for more work tasks. Just don’t let your boss catch you; and if he does, don’t ever mention me under any circumstances, I’m trying to keep a good reputation here.
As cheesy as it sounds, if you enjoy what you do for living, rising up early would be less torturous; the dedicated night owl in you would be somehow happy compromising a bit for the sake of a good job you actually love.
The more you hate your job, the more sleep you crave
After all, a night owl will always be a night owl.
