“Alexa, Play Apple Music”

Apple and Amazon announced last month that Apple Music came to echo devices. The music streaming service was launched on e-commerce’s products on Friday. Today, Apple has developed advertising activity around the new partnership, and also says App Store users to ask Alexa to play Apple Music.

But wait, there’s more! Amazon confirmed that Apple Music will soon come to other Alexa-powered devices, which will contain a wide range of brands such as Sonos Logitech Ultimate Ears, and more.

Amazon has the largest smith-speaker installed base in the United States, so it’s not surprising that Apple delivers its music service to these devices. However, bringing Apple Music to other third-party devices is an unexpected twist.

The expansion of the platform is significant for some reasons, in addition to the mere confirmation that Amazon is crushing Apple on the smart speaker market. Perhaps it is especially impressive that Adobe is far from Siri at this time, even though the Mac manufacturer had a significant destruction advantage.

Apple launched Siri 2011 after acquisition of its sole start. Alexa would not launch for another three years. Alexa is now the most live virtual assistant platform, with over 70,000 third-party skills. It’s safe to say that Apple threw that wire and trying to get along with that fact.

Rival music streaming service Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) can lead globally to paid subscribers, but Apple could take over the Swedish company in the US market earlier this year. Spotify’s platform targeting is the key to its ubiquity, and Apple knows it. If Apple has any hopes of booting Spotify subscribers, the company knows that it needs to catch up with hardware partnerships.

Although Apple Music is not so profitable after factoring in royalties, service is still one of the key pillars of the company’s growth strategy for its increasingly important service business. Growing the subscriber base also helps another important measurement that Apple now lists every quarter: Paid subscriptions.

When Apple first launched iTunes on Windows 15 years ago, Steve Jobs said it was “like giving ice cream to someone in hell.” How would CEO Tim Cook describe that Apple Music to Alexa?
