Only Apple Authorized Resellers can now sell Apple and Beats products on Amazon Marketplace.
Currently, many of these Apple products are either unavailable on Amazon or sold only through their third party marketplace at different prices and terms. Amazon already sells direct some Apple devices, such as MacBook laptops and Beats headphones.
“Amazon is constantly working to improve customer experience and one of the ways we do this is to increase the range of products we know customers want,” an Amazon spokesman said in a statement on Friday. “We’re looking forward to Expand our range of Apple and Beats products globally. “
With the new deal, customers should expect to see a wider range of new Apple products and at standard prices. In addition, the deal offers a great profit for Amazon just before the holiday hopping season, giving it more electronics from a leading manufacturer of appliances with highly sought after products. For Apple, the agreement can help sell more devices worldwide.
The agreement also points to the relationships between the two tech giants that are improving, after Amazon has removed Apple TV video streamers from its website in 2015,. At the same time last year, Amazon said that there were also Google Chromecast streamers, but they are still unavailable in connection with shaky relationships with Google.
“We work with Amazon to improve Apple’s customers experience on their website,” said Apple spokesman Nick Leahy, “and we look forward to the customers having another great way to buy iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and more. “
The time of the deal raises questions, says eMarketer analyst Andrew Lipsman, adding that Amazon’sduring its last quarter could have been a motivator for the company’s heading in the holiday. He said that Apple could risk giving sales data to Amazon.
“But the real threat exists in Amazon to introduce a competing product. I would say that Apple is pretty safe there,” he said.
The arrangement includes some precautions. Apple’s HomePod smart speakers, competing against Amazon’s own Echo devices, are not included. Amazon does not list either HomePod or the rival Google Home speakers.
“We make sorting decisions all the time, based on conditions and a host of other factors,” said Amazon’s chairman of leaving HomePod. Also, independent sellers listing new and used Apple products on Amazon will have these listings left after January 4, 2019. These sellers will now have to apply from Apple to become Amazon’s authorized resellers. An email to seller if this change expired immediately after the agreement was signed.
The agreement does not affect Amazon’s renewed program, which sells certified refurbished electronics.
The change will allow Apple and Amazon to have greater control over stock and pricing of Apple products. But smaller sellers and people who turn iPhones right after they are sold are likely to be hurt by the deal. Customers who deal with used (but not refurbished) Apple products can find a much more limited selection on Amazon. In both cases, sellers and customers are more likely to go to rival websites like eBay instead.
Amazon has already added more restrictions to its market over the years, making it more difficult for small sellers to post Amazon products if they do not work directly with the brands they list. Amazon inked a similar partnership with Nike last year which enabled both companies to reduce counterfeits on Amazon and gain stronger control over unauthorized third party sales of Nike products.
Independent sellers with Apple stocks in Amazon stores after January 4 must create a cancellation order, with Amazon offering to replace repayment or disposal fees until early February. These sellers will not be able to ship more Apple products to Amazon stocks as of December 1st.
