Apple Eyes 2020 Launch Of Augmented Reality Glasses

Apple (AAPL) could start production of augmented reality glasses in the fourth quarter of a commercial release in the first half of 2020, according to a key Apple analyst. X Ming-Chi Kuo , an analyst with KGI Securities, said the first-generation AR glasses would require an iPhone to use. The smartphone would supply internet connectivity, location services and computing, Kuo said in a report Friday. The augmented reality specs would serve as a display for information provided by the iPhone, according to 9to5Mac Kuo said mass production of the smart glasses might not happen until the second quarter of the next year, the report said. Augmented reality overlays digital information into a person's field of view. Currently Apple provides augmented reality applications and AR software tools for the iPhone and iPad. These applications combine digital images with camera images on the device display. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has spoken frequently about the coming importance of AR technology. AR apps on iOS devices now include games, educational aids and measuring and visualization tools. Analysts say moving the AR display from mobile devices to a headset is a natural progression for the technology. But current augmented reality headsets from Microsoft (MSFT), Magic Leaps and others are large and unattractive. Apple stock rose 0.2% to 1 72.91 on the stock market today.
