In an interview with BuzzFeed News released Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook Bloomberg called back a controversial investigation report that found that Chinese spies used microchips to infiltrate several major US technology companies.
Although Apple released a statement to deny Bloomberg’s findings shortly after the published survey, Cook’s comment on BuzzFeed News was the first time the CEO had publicly spoken about it and marks an unusual confrontational feature of the world’s most valuable tech company.
“There is no truth in its story about Apple,” Cook said to BuzzFeed News. “They have to do the right thing and withdraw it.”
Bloomberg found that Chinese spies managed to implant small chips on computer motherboard manufactured by Supermicro Computer and insert servers used by several of the largest US technology companies, including Amazon and Apple. The chips were designed to provide secret access to private data on the machines, says the report.
Since the publication of the report, a series of statements from authorities and information security staff ̵
1; including some mentioned in the stories – have doubted the most important results.
