Amazon marks its first Black Friday shopping event since its launch in Australia with tens of thousands of products heavily discounted.
E-commerce giant was generally expected to open in time for last year’s after-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy but missed the brand, eventually launched in December to a subdued response.
“We are pleased to bring our first ever Black Friday arrangement to Australian customers with tens of thousands of products available at discounted prices,” said Amazon Australia Country Manager Rocco Braeuniger in a statement.
“With promotions ranging from active wear brands like Lorna Jane and Puma, to everyday essentials like Nivea and big brand skin care products, to consoles like PS4, Nintendo and Xbox, we hope there’s something for everyone.”
Market professor Gary Mortimer, the Queensland University of Technology, said he did not believe that the Black Friday would give an enormous rise to Amazon’s wealth underneath. “Since they have opened here in Australia, it has had very little impact directly on the market,” he said.
“By saying that this is a long game they play. Progressively this year we have seen them add new categories, fresh toys, pets, car and grocery stores. But as it stands, eBay is still the most popular site , followed by Gumtree with Amazon in third place. “
Amazon customers can use the app to” view “current and upcoming deals, of which there are a few different types. “Lightning deals” are limited campaigns while stocks last and are limited to one customer purchase.
Today’s offers last for 24 hours or until stocks last and include discounts on popular items. Customers can also access US offers via the local website, with free shipping to Amazon’s $ 7 monthly subscription fee.
If a deal sells out there is an option to join a waiting list to be notified when more stock is released. Some offers are exclusive to Prime members, who can also access some flash discounts 30 minutes in advance.

On Thursday, the online retailer returned to a controversial decision earlier this year to stop sending to Australia from their international stores, made in response to government’s online GST changes.
Dr Mortimer said that Black Friday was still “developed” in Australia. “US shoppers last year spent about $ 1
9 billion over the four-day period, these numbers are not near this in Australia,” he said.
“Kogan last year reported a sales card of about $ 4 million. What we see here in Australia is surely more physical retailers jumping on the trolleys, especially consumer electronics dealers like JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.”
