A tornado struck Norton, Mass., On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service said. The forecasts had previously said that a twister had also ripped through one, if not two, Rhode Island cities at about the same time.
“National Weather Service … has confirmed that a tornado touched Norton MA yesterday. Further investigation work is ongoing to determine further details about this tornado,” forecasters said in a statement.
The weather service said earlier that a tornado that tore Lincoln, RI, on Tuesday afternoon may have whipped 90-1
00 miles per hour, making it a EF1 tornado.
Weather service meteorologist Joe Dellicarpini told a press conference Wednesday morning in the city, “We came to the main area for harm first “and said the team would proceed to the investigation injury in North Providence, RI” This is the next on our list. “
He said it was “very likely” that the damage in North Providence, adjacent to Lincoln, was caused by the same tornado that struck Lincoln.
“We believe the injuries in North Providence were from the same storm and were tornadian,” he said.
He said it was possible that there were several tornadoes in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Tuesday afternoon
NWS meteorologists also reviewed reports of a water pole (or a tornado over water) in Sandwich, Mass. .
He said that the tornado activity was “definitely unusual” at the time of the year but “not uncommon.” Most tornadoes are seen in the area in July and August.
He said the forecasts knew it would be a thunderstorm on Tuesday, but the tornads were “a little unexpected”. He said there was “a little more going on yesterday” in the atmosphere th a forecasts realized.
The thorns occurred as heavy thunderstorms crashed through the region Tuesday afternoon, dumping rain, hooting hail and whipping up high winds that struck down trees and cords.
In Lincoln, “everyone was in a panic on the streets,” said the fire brigade after the twister ripped through a neighborhood.
