(CNN) – A jaguar attacked a woman in a zoo in Arizona and left her with injuries requiring medical attention, the fire brigade said.

The attack happened Saturday night at the Wildlife World Zoo in Litchfield Park, said Shawn Gilleland of the Rural Metro Fire Department.

9659002] Adam Wilkerson said he was in the zoo with his family when someone came running around the corner and shouting for help.

“Without thinking, I had no idea what to see, I just ran over there,” he said. “I saw the other girl up against the fence with the arm caught in the jaguar’s claws.”

Wilkerson said he was behind the woman but didn’t want to pull off her. “I could see the claws in her real flesh,” he said.

In an attempt to divert the jaguar, Wilkerson said, his mother ran up behind him and shot her water bottle through the cage. The bottle distracted the jaguar and released the victim.

“When my mother put the water bottle through the gate, the jaguar dropped the girl and we pulled the girl back and she collapsed,” he said.

Wilkerson did not see the actual attack and could not comment on how the victim was so close to the animal.

There were no employees nearby during the event, Wilkerson said.

Litchfield Park is located about 20 miles from Phoenix.
