CHRISTIAN YOUNG, KEIRA YOUNG, AND KALEY YOUNG (CUT BOARD PRO) ABC

On Sunday’s Shark Tank audiences and Sharks alike were moved by one particularly tragic and compelling story. The Cup Board Pro-a new kind of cutting board was pitched to the sharks by the children of its inventor Keith Young. 24-year-old Kaley accompanied by her 19- year-old brother Christian and 15-year-old sister Kiera showed Keith’s original audition video for Shark Tank before pitching the product and explaining the heartbreak and trauma they experienced along the way to the Tank. The sharks were so invested in the siblings and the product that they gave an unprecedented offer: all five sharks on the panel gave them the $ 100k they were asking for in return for 20% of the company, and the profits the sharks received from their 20% would all be donated to a charity of Kaley’s choice related to all viating the health care costs of 9/11 first responders. I was so moved by the story, and I talked to Kaley about her time pitching on the show, what it’s been like since starting to work with the sharks and what it feels like to carry on her father’s legacy through the product he cared so much about.

Forbes: Why do not you tell me a little bit about the product?

Kaley Young: Sure! The cupboard pro is a 2-sided cutting board with an insertable cup that inserts into the cutting board. It was invented by my dad when I was in high school, and my dad, when he was creating it, at the time, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. He put everything on hold to pray by her side. After my mom passed away to cancer on August 22, 2012, it was really a hard thing for my family to go through, and it took my dad some time to get back to it. He was asked to go on Chopped and that kind of gave him the confidence again to continue on this board and put more passion behind it. He had an order of 2,000 cutting boards from China, perfectly perfect the way he wanted it, a high-quality product. He begon chemo right away and had to have a huge surgery, which paused everything once again. Three months before Shark Tank, he passed.

F: I’m so sorry.

KY: Thank you

F: What did you guys do to prepare for Shark Tank?

KY: To prepare to do to carry on his legacy is great. be on shark tank my siblings and i would just practice our pitch in the kitchen all the time. As much as you can prepare, there’s no way to really describe what it’s like to be in there.

F: Coming in, did you have a specific shark you wanted to work with?

KY: We did not specifically have a shark that we were focusing on on, we wilden gewoon de product en het verhaal delen en hoop dat de beste persoon voor het product zou komen achter het. To go in believing in the product as much as we do and who wanted to support it we really wanted to have a part of our team.

F: So how do you feel about the final result?

KY: It does not feel real. It’s crazy. It feels like a dream honestly.

F: What has it been like since the show?

KY: The support from the sharks has been incredible.

F: How did it feel to watch them react so strongly to your story?

KY: I wasn ‘ t expecting that at all. My siblings and I have watched a lot of Shark Tank episodes to prep for our experience, to put ourselves more into the situation mentally and visualize beforehand, and we’ve never seen a reaction like that.

F: What was the general experience of being on the show like-you said you were blacked out, but do you have other descriptors for how you felt during it?

KY: During it, I felt like we had the strength of our parents behind us all. Having my brother and my sister by my side I just felt super grateful to be there and given that experience. I just let my heart out on how awesome my parents were because words can not even describe the people my parents were in this world.

What was the process of that like? Was you involved in that at all?

KY: So both my parents had jobs and worked on this on the side, and we got the whole family involved. We were big on just family time in general so I would watch my dad if he would take plastic cutting boards and carve into them to make his vision come to life and then he was connected to an industrial engineer who really helped him get it going, have it manufactured in China. My Dad would actually take me to him to kitchen conventions in Chicago and we would go to different events in California as well to prepare and make his product the best it could be. I helped him with the graphic design of his website and the logo, creating marketing tools, so I just fully believed in my dad’s product and wanted him to succeed as much as he can so I just stood behind it wherever my strengths were in it.

F: What’s next for cupboard pro? What’s the next step?

KY: My and my sibling’s vision for the cub board pro was to really realize my dad’s dream of having it in every kitchen in America and we’re not gonna stop until we make that happen. [19659023] “>
