Long-term exposure to road noise can increase the risk of obesity, says a recent research. Obesity is defined as a physical condition involving excessive body fat. Previous studies have shown associations between traffic noise and multiple obesity markers. This study aimed at confirming the link between these sounds and weight gain.
“Our analysis shows that people exposed to the biggest traffic disorder are at greater risk of being overweight,” explains Maria Foraster, the first author of the study. “For example, it was observed that a 1

0 dB increase in the average noise level was associated with a 17 percent increase in obesity.”

Researchers also analyzed exposure to noise generated by aircraft and rail traffic and found no significant compounds except for long-term exposure to rail disorders, which was associated with a higher risk of overweight but not obesity.
For the survey, the authors saw data from two different perspectives. Cross-sectional analysis was used to study the participant population at a specific time in the study and to investigate more objective measures.

Through the longitudinal design, the authors evaluated how the risk of obesity developed during the study period. The results showed that the compounds with traffic-related noise pollution were consistent in both cases. Obesity was only associated with exposure to traffic-related noise in the cross-sectional analysis. The authors found no link between noise exposure and body mass index, which was measured continuously during longitudinal analysis.

“Our study contributes additional evidence to support the hypothesis that traffic-related noise affects obesity because the results we received in another population were the same as those reported by the authors of previous studies. However, more longitudinal studies are required to confirm the association and to investigate certain inconsistencies in the data that hitherto prevented us from formulating a statement accepted by the scientific community as a whole, “explained Maria Foraster. The authors emphasized the need for necessary measures to limit noise. Noise generates stress and affects our sleep. It changes the hormone levels and increases blood pressure.
