Land Rover is particularly proud of two high-tech alternatives. A forward-facing system called ClearSight Ground View uses camcorders in the grid and mirrors to create a video liner to look forward and below, the front of the car. We are told that it was designed for both terrain vehicles and to avoid sharp edge edges. A ClearSight Back View system integrates a video monitor in the rear view mirror, which can be set when passengers or luggage block the view through the dinky rear window. The company notes that 50-degree viewpoints are wider than a standard mirror offering.

Mechanically, most are known. This Evoque still uses front strut suspension and a multilink rear axle and continues with the cross-mounted version of JLR’s 2.0-liter turbocharged ingenious gasoline four-cylinder. There are two exits offered, 246 and 296 horsepower, with brawnier one with 48-volt hybrid system. The car maker has not released performance claims for the Evoque variant yet, but has released official weight: 3935 pounds for the base car and 4075 pounds for the P300.

The power passes through a standard nine-speed automatic gearbox and is sent to each corner by a four-wheel drive system that can now completely disconnect the drive to the rear axle to help boost the economy. The Brawnier P300 model has active torque vibration; We do not know if this is the innovative Twinster system offered on the first generation of Evoque, which was closely related to the active rear axle of the now-retired Ford Focus RS. The springs are steel, but adaptive dampers will be offered as an alternative; 18-inch wheels come as standard, with upgrade options up to 21 inches. Land Rover claims 8.3 inch ground clearance and the ability to pass up to 23.6 inches of water, almost four inches more than the last Evoque.

The hybrid system is the most material technological innovation. Working with the most powerful engine, it uses a belt drive starter to generate electricity during braking. It is stored in a floor battery, with the charge used to help the engine at low speeds. Land Rover has not shown how much contribution the electrical side of the drive can do, but we suspect it will be modest. As a comparison, the Mercedes-Benz like hybrid 48-volt system can only add only 14 horsepower.

The new Evoque will first be shown at the Chicago car show in February and will be sold later this year. We update this story with additional information, including pricing, as soon as it is available.
