It still manages to deliver 35 mpg combined when it does, which is excellent for this type of vehicle and 6 mpg more than the conventional crosstalk can. Both versions are brand new for 2019 and share just about everything else, although the Hybrid has some signature blue accents and “Plug-In” marks to visually set it apart.

The reworked crosstalk is much more refined than the original, and equally spacious inside. Heated front seats and the steering wheel are marked, but there are no valves for the rear passengers, even smaller USB ports, so make sure your kids bundle up and take a book.

There comes the standard Subaru EyeSight active safety system, which includes automatic emergency brakes, lane maintenance assistance and radar control. It’s all good until the weather gets bad. While I was driving through some moderate snow, it was so often disabled that it was worthless. Most of the system warnings intervene early on when it works, but Subaru seems to have programmed it to play it safely so you won’t be sad.

I wasn’t sorry to see that snow. It should be a requirement for each Subaru test run. Especially the Cropped trek, which turned out to be so safe foot, expected, even if one had a set of full-time tires. It has a limber suspension that is well-attenuated for the road.

The hybrid has only 148 hp, which is 4 hp less than the conventional Crosstalk, but the electric motor gives you all that is when you ask, so the Hybrid accelerates faster even though it weighs 500 pounds more. On a snow-covered track, it is a quartz fun.

Unfortunately, much of that weight is due to an inelegantly integrated battery that rises a few centimeters away from the floor of the cargo floor and steals about 5 cubic feet of space and spare decks. But the benefits you get with it can be worth the balance.

The capacity of the battery is great to qualify for a $ 4,500 federal EV tax credit, along with additional state incentives and HOV lane access in one or more locations. It goes a long way towards justifying Hybrid’s starting price of $ 34,995 (excl. Destination fee), which is $ 7,800 more than a comparatively equipped Crosstrek without a plug. About $ 350 in annual fuel savings – more if you stick to the short electric trips – further reduce the difference.

Crosstrek Hybrid is definitely different, but it won’t be too long. Range Rover has a couple of plug-ins on the road that will chase it in the woods soon.
